Travel 2007 by Margaret
One of the first articles way back in the beginning of StyleTreaty was on packing for a trip abroad. Since then, new regulations have been imposed as regards what you may and may not have in your carry on luggage. I’m going to assume that everyone has finessed the clothing and shoes aspect of packing - ie put everything you own on your bed, remove everything that’s totally unsuitable, remove 90% of your shoes and bags, and halve the rest and there you go. Today I’m going to deal with the teeny-tiny bag you get to use to carry on any liquid-ish thing you may need, and other stuff that goes in your carry on.
Firstly, the resealable bag issue. According to the Shannon Airport Website, passengers may not carry any liquid unless it conforms to these rules:
- You can only take liquids, gels, pastes, lotions and cosmetics in containers of no more than 100 millilitres in size through the passenger security point at all EU airports.
- These containers must be carried in a tranparent, re-sealable plastic bag and presented separately to the security screening officers.
- There is a limit of one transparent plastic bag per person.
- The volume of the transparent plastic bag may not be greater than one litre, 20cm x 20cm.
- The transparent plastic bag must be re-sealable.
To this end, I’ve spent the year gathering up sample sizes of lots of my favourite products, and saving samples out of magazines. I know many people think I’m nuts because of this, but it really is the easiest way to travel. I also have bought Tesco Small Resealable Bags (€1.39 for 25) and Tesco Large Resealable Bags (€1.45 for 15). I know the large ones are way too big for Carry-on (unless you’re separating say, Magazines from papers you need to work on), but they are very useful for your checked-in luggage, where they can be used for storing dirty laundry, keeping fluffy jumpers away from other items, and other organisational issues.
Anyway, this year in my little plastic bag I will be carrying the following:
- Neutrogena SPF20 lipbalm
- Sanex Excel Concentrated (75ml)
- A single facial cleansing wipe taken from a magazine
- Clarins Multi-Active Day Lotion (15ml) (Free sample from Brown Thomas)
- Soltan Face Cream SPF50 (50 ml)
- Travel Sized Theramed (15 ml)
- Toothbrush
and that’s it! Of course, getting all that into one bag may present a challenge, but I’ll be travelling with himself, so he might wind up carrying some of it for me. I’ll buy a bottle of water in the Duty Free, and that (a stack of books, a magazine and my mp3 player) should see me through.
Arrividerci!
