I am not a plastic bag
I’m a great believer in reusable bags, I always have my black tesco finest canvas bags in the car. When you consider that each crappy plastic bag is now 22c those canvas ones were a bargain when I got them buy one get one free for €1.

This pic comes from te BBC website
Well the reusable bag has gone all designer on us……yes the Anya Hindmarch “I am not a plastic bag” will be hitting Irish shores on 28th July. They were about $10 in the states so we shouldn’t expect to pay more than €10 I suppose. I called Brown Thomas, who will be stocking the bags and they don’t know the price yet. They are so desirable that they are going on ebay for crazy money.
This one from ebay is going for €143 so far………
I should warn you that there is already a waiting list in Limerick already.
Update: Thanks to Anne from the Limerick Leader for letting me know that the bag will be €12 and the PR company advised her that there’s no waiting list!!!Â

Second update: Check out the Limerick Blogger, Squid has pictures of the queue. I’m afraid I didn’t make it in to town on Saturday morning, a sleep in seemed way more advantageous at the time. Â

God that’s ridiculous! That’s to the extent of Prius Owners “I bought this to help save the world!” Just think, for the cost of that bag listed on eBay you could outfit an entire house with CFL bulbs and do more good for the environment!

In Habitat they have a range of recycled items such as a notebook where the cover is made from rubber and says “I used to be a car-tire”

Elly, I agree €143 is crazy. If I can get my hands on one I’ll probably get one but only if I can get it for the actual price….shouldn’t be more than €15 I’d say.

Will someone please explain to me what’s so great about designers? I just don’t get this (speaking as someone from a design background myself).
I don’t know why people pay extra just because some designer signs their name to something. After all, everything is designed. Everything has a designer. It’s not that hard to be a designer, you know, and most of them know nothing about quality.
Is it about the name or what? For example, had you actually heard of this Anya Hindmarch person before this bag went on sale? I never did, but of course that means little, me being an old robber and general grouch.

Hey Marion
Apparently there’s no waiting list, according to the PR company. The bags go on sale on Sat, July 28, for €12.
Just thought I better let you know!

Thanks Anne, if the reception in other countries is anything to go by there’ll be a queue!!!!

Hey Maz,
Just checked my e-mail and there is one from BT’s about this bag Anne is right it is €12 and goes on sale on July 28th at 9am. They will not accept telephone orders, it is first come first serve and only one bag per person. The BT group have been allocated 1900 bags to be distributed as follows:
BT Dublin 1200
BT Cork 400
BT Limerick 200
BT Galway 100.
E-mail includes photos of various celebrities toting their bags. Is there something wrong with me that I find this vaguely insulting?! Are the proceeds of this going to an environmental charity? I’ll get off my soapbox now!

I had no idea this post would cause such a reaction (a negative one). I have to say some of the points made above are things that wouldn’t have crossed my mind and it’s always good to get a different perspective on things
I can’t help it though……I still want it. I’m not going to go out of my way to get it but if I am one of the first 200 then I’ll get one!!!! Bah humbug to the rest of ye!!!!!!

Nope the proceeds dont go to charity and the bag is not made from recycled materials etc. Its another fashion fad! Stick to your tesco recyclables!

Will you update this thread after the craziness tomorrow? These bags were hyped to hell here in the U.S. I’d never heard of the Anya Hindmarch person until two weeks ago when I was shopping in my local Whole Foods Market. The lady at the cash register told me about them. I got up a littler earlier than usual on the day assigned and got to the store about 10 minutes before it opened. There was a long long queue already — I figure a few hundred people and in this case they were allowing three bags per person. I though about going home again but decide to stick around at least until the store opened. Well, I got my three bags about 20 minutes later.
I was surprised about the ethnic mix in the group. It was probably about two-thirds Asian. This was in White Plains, NY where there is not much of an Asian population. I figure they either travelled out of New York City or they had flown in especially for the occasion. I wonder will you see the same in Ireland?

nya nya nya nya nyaaaaa we got pictures of the queue, from whom, I am not entirely sure, a female relative of one of our writers took them.
I’m half sorry I don’t have one of these, I paid 66 cent for tesco ones tonight and the bloody things fell apart half way down the road,

I’m with Maz on this, there’s no way I’d have gotten out of my bed to queue in the cold for the Anya Hindmarch bag, but I’d certainly carry it if I got one. I can’t believe that many people queued, we all knew there was only going to be 200 bags, surely people queuing for that long would have taken a quick head count, realised they had no chance and left. People are strange…
Did you hear they queued from 6am for the new Woodie’s store opening on the Ennis Road? There was some good offers on admittedly but none worth leaving a cosy bed at that hour of the morning, no chance!

Yeah, people would queue for anything these days. I mean if there’s a queue, it must be something good right????
