Garden State

This post should really have appeared on MTeriors as a guest post but I started in Wordpress so it’s going to have to live here now!!

Many of us are now doing the American thing and giving Apartment living a go, some of us out of necessity and some by choice. Well either way a lot of us do not have the luxury (or some might say hassle) of a garden. So the balcony has become the new garden. They can be a bit bleak, I know mine was, so anything that will brighten them up can be a huge help. For me, I didn’t really want flowers (a bit too much maintenance) so I opted for useful plants, I have three window boxes out there and a few pots.

Peppermint, Rosemary and Thyme (these were all gifts from my Mom)

Parsley (from tesco), Oregano (from the Market) and Chives (from tesco)

Oakleaf lettuce (from the market) and the yellow watering can (from Heatons)

This will (in time) be a bay tree, I got it from tesco when it was tiny.

The ones that I got in tesco came from the salad section in the little plastic pots.

Because I rent I didn’t spend alot on the balcony, I wanted it to be useful rather than pretty but I think if I owned the aparment I’d love to have some furniture and some more exciting plants out there. Now it’s not as easy as it sounds, there are issues with sun exposure and wind exposure and of course space. That’s where gardini.ie come in, they are a one-stop shop for all things balcony and small urban garden related. You can buy plants and herbs online or you can opt for their Ready Made balcony garden, where they deliver a new garden to you!! All the plants they use are specially chosen to be low maintenance. Here are some examples of their work.

These window boxes are so cute.

They also do furniture suitable for balconies or small spaces.

I can’t see their price list on the website, but I’m sure each project is individually costed. You need to email them to order plants or herbs. Check the website out here.
