Style Advice - Part Two
More from Celia Larkin.
When she got into more detail she advised that there are two types of body shape, curvy and straight. Curvy people will find that they have a defined waist (as a rule of thumb if you are curvy your waist will be about 8-10 inches smaller than your hips). Curvy people will probably put on weight on their arms, bum and hips. Straight bodied people will have very little difference between the measurement of their waist and their hips and most of their weight will be carried on their torso. She pointed out that curvy people should wear curvy clothes (i.e. have a taper somewhere, like nipped in jackets, boot cut pants etc) and straight bodies people should wear straight clothes, it all seems pretty obvious when you think about it! She even said that if you are curvy, your belts (or at least wide ones) should also curve if you hold them up by the buckle.
One of her big tips was that you should draw attention away from the widest part of any part of you. So for example if you have wide calves then your skirt, pants etc shouldn’t end at the widest part of your leg, it should end either above or below it. The same applies to jackets or tops. If you have wide hips your jackets should either end above or below your hips. A rule of thumb which she mentioned was that you should measure yourself from the top of your shoulder to the floor in your stocking feet and half that length is your ideal jacket length!

Your clothes should compliment your body figure even if you’re not too proud of it (in which case, these tips should help). As the legendary designer Tom Ford says, “Americans have grown too accustomed to being comfortable. I find a different kind of comfort when I know I look good.†[...]
